Originally called Lyon-Satolas Airport, Saint Exupéry Airport is 25 km east of the French city of Lyon. Designed in 1975 by G. Gillet, this international airport initially had just one runway and two terminals. Several extensions and refurbishments later, it is now France's fourth largest airport in terms of annual passenger numbers. The high-speed rail station, designed by Santiago Calatrava in 1994, features majestic and highly distinctive architecture, symbolising a bird taking flight. The airport was renamed Lyon-Saint Exupéry in 2000 to mark the centenary of Lyon-born writer Antoine de Saint Exupéry's birth.
The architects Maucourt and Madignier overhauled the airport's terminals and shopping arcade. In the hall linking the two terminals, DH 30 rated Pyropane glass barriers limit the spread of any gas and smoke without compromising the central building's aesthetics.
