Can I add a decorative film to fire-resistant glass?

It is possible to apply a decorative film on Pyrobel / Pyrobelite under certain conditions.
See details in the assessment of decorative film on glass.

Is fire-resistant glass considered to be a safety glass?

European standard EN 12600 defines the safety levels and behaviour of glazing in the event it is broken following an impact. The impact-resistance performance required for a given application is subject to national regulations.

All types of Pyrobel(ite), Pyropane and Pyrobel-T from AGC have been tested in accordance with EN 12600 (pendulum test). The two modes of breakage accepted by the standard are classified as classes B and C.

The performance (classes in accordance with EN 12600) of each Pyrobel product can be found in the Product Selector leaflet or using the Glass Configurator tool on the Yourglass website.

How can I find the right fire-protection glazing?

The level of fire protection required is dictated by the various regulations applying to the building sector and by the relevant authorities, which will determine the requirements that the glazed element must comply with in terms of classification (E, EW, EI) and duration, expressed in minutes (between 30 and 180 minutes).

Therefore, the choice of laminated fire-resistant glazing will be based on:

  • the fire resistance required by European and national regulations;
  • the type of application: dormer window, facade, partition, door, barrier;
  • type-approvals available for each type of frame and dimensions in every country.

Each glazed element must be tested in a test furnace. The glazed element is always a combination of glazing and a frame (aluminium, wood, steel) in a specific environment.

An approved laboratory issues a test report certifying that the element has passed the fire-resistance test.

Use our Product Selector tool to find the right fire-resistant glazing and its accompanying test report.

Is Pyropane a symmetrical fire-resistant glazing?

As a rule, Pyropane with a coating is fire-resistant on one side only (class EW-compliant). Pyropane can be made fire-resistant on both sides (class EW-compliant) by using a single sheet of coated Pyropane, such as version 152-70 (EW 30), or by using double or triple glazing that incorporates two sheets of Pyropane, such as version IGU 152-70.

Single Pyropane glazing without a coating is always fire-resistant on both sides (class E-compliant, flameproof).

For an extremely well protected escape route, EW 60 classification is only required for one direction. This can be achieved with various types of Pyropane in steel frames.

How far apart should the screws used in wooden glazing beads be positioned?

In fire-resistance tests, the maximum distance between the screws in glazing beads is 250 mm. The distance from the corner to the first screw is no more than 150 mm.

If the distance exceeds 150 mm, there is a chance that the glazing beads will bend and not be stable enough in a fire.

Can we use all types of paintable silicone?

According to technical approval R0469, paint may be applied to joints that are made of polysulphides, silicone or polyurethane, depending on their flammability and EW 30 fire-resistance ratings.

AGC has already tested several types of joints successfully, including Den Braven Hydraseal 2PS, Sika 84UV, Soudal TS and Bloem Oneseal.
